Adding the 230 measures of the repeat to the 846 measures of the uncut version, the finale is 1,076 measures long - an unprecedented scale in instrumental music. Only in 1975 was the original, uncut version first published, within the New Schubert-Edition (BГ¤renreiter), permitting the grandeur of Schubert's tragic vision to be experienced at last. He struck the exposition repeat (thereby cutting the piece by 230 measures) and made two cuts totaling 99 bars in the development that mangle the coherence of the movement. Like Bruckner, Schubert was often susceptible to well-meant but ill-advised counsel in this regard. Schubert's friends were evidently convinced that the movement was too long and seem to have persuaded him to cut it. The scherzando third movement, both gracious and learned with constant melodic imitation between the strings and piano, is punctuated by a quirky, rhythmically headstrong trio. The shattering climax of this march puts the E-flat Trio in the company of the G-major String Quartet, D 887 Winterreise, D 911 and the Quintet with two cellos, D956, in its evocation of sheer terror, unmatched in Western music. The movement has the unmistakable sense of a funeral march, and indeed the great violinist Rudolf Kolisch remarked to me nearly 40 years ago that it was undoubtedly meant to mourn the death of Beethoven, which occurred nearly nine months previous. What is striking about it, beyond its virtuosity, is a sense of nostalgia in the first movement that yields in the second to a classic elegy, in which grieving alternates with consolation. Whereas the B-flat Trio is a confident work that unites bravura and lyrical expression, the E-flat Trio is a harrowing composition.
